Millennials & Your Nonprofit

admin • February 6, 2017

As of 2017, Millennials have the largest buying power in the U.S. Gone are the days of alone targeting the baby boomer population. So, what is the best way to tap into this resource for your nonprofit?

Millennials don’t support organizations. They support causes. If they are passionate about your cause, they will broadcast it on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, among others.   They are able to reach thousands of their peers all while spreading that passion for your cause.   What can you do to inspire this passion?

Millennials are looking for an experience.   They want to donate their time, not just their money.   They want to make a memory.   They want to be a part of something.   They want to feel invested.   They have a sense of mission, not obligation.   Not only do they want to give more than money, they want to have their voice heard.

Millennials want to see the effect their gifts are having on a cause. Do you show your supporters what their financial contributions are doing? They don’t want to see boring financial reports. They want to see stories, pictures, and testimonials from the people you have served.   Demonstrate the impact your nonprofit organization makes on people’s lives.

Let’s not forget that Millennials are tech savvy.   What does your website look like?   Does it confirm the difference you are making?   Is it easy to donate money through your website? Millennials like to make the most of their time and want giving financially to be straight forward and effortless. They want to use their time to physically contribute to your mission.

Research some of the success stories that inspire folks to get involved in “doing” not just giving.   Charity:Water created a birthday initiative asking its supporters to request donations in lieu of birthday gifts.   This campaign has blossomed into a great fundraiser for them.  Get inspired so you can inspire your donors.

Most importantly, stay in touch with your millennials.   They value relationships.   Engage with your Millennials often.   They are accustomed to being and feeling “connected”.   Encourage them. They are the future of your nonprofit.
